When you’re driving on unfamiliar roads, or worried about making a driving faux pas, it can really take the fun and excitement out of your visit. After all, the last thing you want is to be involved in an auto accident.
The solution is simple, take your time, do a little research and follow these 5 simple driving tips for exploring a new city. Have fun!
Eliminate all distractions
You’re in a completely new place, with other cars, vehicles and pedestrians all around you and things are moving fast. To avoid a crash or causing an accident you need to eliminate all distractions in your vehicle so you can concentrate on what’s happening around you and on the road ahead. Ensure your smartphone is out of reach, turn down the radio, ask your fellow passengers to quieten down and let you concentrate.
Give yourself extra time
Ok, so maybe your new destination isn’t that far away, but if you need to be there for a certain time then it’s always best to allow more time to travel so you can arrive safely. There may be long queues that you’re not aware of or difficulty parking, or you may take a wrong turn and have to double back on yourself. Avoid getting yourself stressed and allow yourself plenty of time to reach your destination. It’s not a race.
Do a little research
It makes sense to avoid driving through a new city when it’s really busy as you’ll feel under more pressure. These busy periods are usually early mornings and late afternoons, right? Well, that might be the case in your home town, but in this new destination, things could be a little different. Conduct a little research to find out when the roads are busiest, and while you’re at it find out if any diversions or roadworks are happening in the area, as this could dramatically change your route and lead to more confusion.
Make sure you have enough gas
There’s nothing more stressful than moving through a new destination at a snails’ pace, all the while your car is reminding you that you’re running low on fuel. Nightmare! Make sure your tank is full of fuel, that way you have one less thing to worry about!
Are you familiar with the road signs?
Don’t be fooled into thinking that you’ll recognize all the road signs in this new destination. Chances are, there’ll be a few you don’t recognize or understand, which could lead to an accident or some pretty dangerous moments! Brush up on the road signs you’re likely to see, that way you can react accordingly and get to your destination safely.
