Coping With Home Costs When Out Of Work: 3 Things To Think About

When you’re out of work, your bills don’t just stop needing to be paid. It would be nice if they did! But you don’t get a break from having to keep your taps flowing, the lights on, and your oven heated for mealtimes.

And if you’re not sure how long you’re going to be out of work – and you have no or limited access to financial aid – this is a pretty scary time to live through too.

So let’s go through a few important decisions you can make at a time like this. They could help you to stay on your feet, keep money worries to a minimum, and get a good night’s sleep night after night.

Get a Real Idea of Your Budget

Looking at your budget at a time like this is going to be stressful, and a few tears may even be shed. We’ve all been there, and it really isn’t a task anyone looks forward to. But you do need to get a fixed, concrete idea of your budget right now.

Primarily, you need to know what you need to pay out, and if there are any areas where you could reduce your expenses.

Start with the fixed expenses. What are you paying out for in the same amount every month? Your mortgage, your insurance premiums, and your gas and electricity (if you pay to keep your account in credit).

This is also where subscription costs are likely to fall, but these aren’t necessary to keep paying. We recommend cancelling as many as possible, especially if you only use them now and then.

Consider an Insurance Policy

Insurance covers you when you’re out of work in the form of income protection. Depending on the reason you’re out of work, you may also be able to get critical illness cover.

There’s a range of pure protection services like these out there, and they can keep family and home costs off your shoulders when you’re out of work.

However, not every protection policy will be beneficial, so be sure to take a very close look at the terms and conditions before you take anything out.

Look into a Side Hustle

If the main idea right now is to try and bring money in ASAP, a side hustle may be the most approachable method for you. Being on a job hunt usually takes a lot of time, and succeeding isn’t only up to you.

A side hustle, on the other hand, can bridge the gap when you’re low on income in a much more self-directed way. Of course, you’ll still need to try and attract customers, but you’re not totally at the mercy of a hiring manager here.

You can also divide your time across a range of hustles. And above all, side hustles are pretty easy to start from home; all you need is a wifi connection.

Home costs can mount when you’re out of work. Take back some control with the ideas above.
