The thing with cars is, they’re very good at warning you that something is wrong. You just need to be paying attention to the signs it’s giving out and the warnings it’s giving you. Very rarely do cars or any vehicles fail out of nowhere. It’s likely you didn’t realise what the signs were or misunderstood the problem.
So what exactly do these warning signs look like, and what do you need to pay attention to?
Unusual Noises While Driving
New or changing noises when you’re driving are a huge cause for concern. When you drive your car, you get used to the sounds it makes, but anything new, especially loud or different, needs to be investigated.
A high-pitched squeal when braking could indicate worn brake pads or glazed rotors, while grinding when braking is more serious and usually means there’s metal-to-metal contact, which causes damage to callipers and rotors and needs addressing urgently.
If you hear knocking or tapping from the engine, you might be facing oil circulation problems, worn bearings, or timing issues.
The thing is, anything can go wrong at any time, and if something is worn or loose, it’ll make a noise, and you should pay attention, not turn the radio up.
Warning Lights That Don’t Go Away
Lights illuminating your dashboard aren’t pretty to look at; they’re your car telling you it needs help and attention immediately. Your warning lights are triggered thanks to sensors on the car that detect problems.
A check engine light that stays on usually indicates there has been a fault code triggered related to emissions, fuel delivery, ignition, or airflow. Some causes will be minor, but others will be serious and will impact engine performance and fuel efficiency and need to be checked out immediately.
If your oil light comes on, you should under no circumstances ignore it. Doing so is going to cause major problems. If it comes on while driving, pull over and check oil levels when the engine is cool. The same goes for battery or charging system lights, which flag issues with the alternator or electrical system. Failing to address these could render your car unable to start, or it could cause it to cut out on you while you’re driving. Not hyperbole, but an actual risk.
Smells, Smoke, or Visible Leaks
Burning smells are not normal, and you need to stop the car and get out if you smell anything resembling burning, as this could be an emergency. A burning oil smell could be the result of oil dripping on hot engine components, while a sulfur or rotten egg smell indicates a catalytic converter or fuel system issue. A sweet smell can be attributed to coolant leaks, which lead to overheating and engine damage.
If you see smoke from the exhaust, you need to book it into your mechanic ASAP.
