Having two children of my own and coming from a large family, I often have to buy birthday and Christmas gifts for children. With Jack being born three weeks before Christmas and Olivia two weeks after, you can imagine that these next few months require quite a lot of gift buying. It can be tough to know where to buy brilliant children’s presents but I am here to share a handy guide to choosing the right gifts for the children in your life.
Make Sure They Are Age Appropriate
As a mother, I am always looking for gifts that are age appropriate. Due to the big difference in ages between my two children, they have very different interests. There are only a few presents that both of them would be interested in and these we usually buy as a joint present.
Both my children have received inappropriate gifts for their ages in recent years and it is sad to see how little they use or play with them because of this. It is vital that gifts that suit a certain age range aren’t gifted to those outside it – unless they have a deep interest in it. It is such a shame to see presents go unused.
No baby toys for those over toddler age, no smartwatches for tiny little toddlers – they either are too old to use them or too little and don’t know how to. Don’t you want your gift to be loved, cherished and used?
Can They Share?
As well as getting gifts for them personally, consider buying presents that children can share. We always buy a few things that the children can share – there are always some gifts that span the ages. Consider their interests and work out what they both like and you might just find the perfect gift for the both of them!
Many people don’t think of giving shared gifts but I have found that my children really enjoy them – as long as it suits both of their interests!

Consider Creativity and Education
Something that is important to me is inspiring creativity and learning. Whilst I think all kids should be able to play with the toys they want, I also feel it is important that they have toys that inspire learning – there is a reason Foundation stage children have Learning Through Play at school! Wicked Uncle have a great range of educational toys including some fantastic STEM sets.
Listen To The Child
Whether you are buying for your own child or you are buying for someone else’s, it is important to listen to the child. If the child is wishing for a certain something, getting them that something will make their day.
I know that many children fall for the trends and want the next big thing – we see it every year with certain toys, games or gifts being hard to find in the run up to Christmas – but a perfect gift is one that a child loves and that they will use. If they get the thing they’ve been wishing hardest for, surely that makes it a perfect gift in their eyes?
These are just a few of my top tips for choosing the perfect gift for children. In the run up to Christmas, we are all thinking about what we need to buy for the important people in our lives. Have you got any ideas of what you will be buying your loved ones yet?

I love finding toys for children and can spend hours looking, now I have grandchildren I am loving noisy and messy toys as well and blame it on my daughter as she doesn’t get told off
Some handy tips! I have to admit I am glad my daughter is older now, however it does make buying gifts for her difficult as she has everything! That and the fact her birthday is a couple of days after Christmas – always a nightmare! Sim x
I am feeling super organised this year and have nearly finished buying for my kids and wider family.
Shared gifts can often work as you can get something a bit more expensive. It all depends on what the gift is.
I remember when I was younger it was just circling things in the Argos catalogue, but it must be so much harder now x
Some great suggestions here, I often got my children learning through play types of toys as they were growing up to help them develop different skills.
Some really great ideas, love the post. Thanks for sharing!
