Choosing New Bedroom Furniture For The Kids

Collaborative Post

I have mentioned recently that we are moving house as our landlord is selling the property we are currently living in. We’ve been looking around at different properties and found one that, fingers crossed, we will be moving into soon. The kids will each have a bedroom and Jack will love it as his bedroom will be larger than the one he has now. This is a stark difference from here – Olivia is currently still in our room (we were about to move her into Jack’s small room but then received our notice) so it will be something completely new for her!

We have some bedroom furniture in our house now but we are looking to either get rid of it or put it in storage for any future children. Both kids need new beds and some furniture and storage for their clothes, books and toys. I’ve asked them each what they want in their bedrooms and have been spending time decluttering books and toys that they no longer want or are broken so that their rooms don’t get cluttered after the move. Our local reuse Facebook page has certainly seen a lot of action from me these past few weeks!

Olivia has her heart set on a princess bed but I think we can get away with just getting her a simple bed and some princess bedding, fingers crossed!  Jack is desperate for a boys cabin bed, especially if it is one that comes with a desk. He is now eight years old and has much more homework now he is in junior school. It would be great if he had somewhere specific that he could sit and get it done without any distractions. He is also really into drawing and writing stories so this would be perfect for him too.

Choosing bedroom furniture, especially for kids, can sometimes be tough. It is hard to know what will work best – you have to consider the style of the furniture, what your child wants and the price, of course. You want something that is good quality and will last the distance, durable but that also doesn’t cost the earth. After all, kids grow quickly and the furniture and bedding they choose now might not be suitable for them in future years.

With the move creeping up on us really quickly, this is something we really need to think about and get our plans in action ready for the actual move. I’d ideally get the new bedroom furniture in before we fully move in just so it isn’t another thing I have to think about moving from here.

New beds, new wardrobes and a new chest of drawers for each – plus somewhere for Jack to put his TV, DVD player and PS3. Not forgetting bookcases and toy storage! So much to think about but I know what I want so I am ready to go!

Do you have any tips for buying children’s bedroom furniture? How have you decorated the bedrooms in your house?

  1. The princess bed – my friend put lots of coloured netting around her daughters bed and got lots of stick on jewels (obvs not real ones) – and made it feel like a princesses den…and then one day they wake up and totally are OFF the princess vibe – and it was a quick change – I remember as a kid getting a choice about my room decs – it felt so grown up!

  2. I decorated my boys bedroom last year and brought them both new high bed with storage. They are fantastic!! Doing my daughters room this year and was hoping to get the same bed, but as it is so big, I don’t think there will be enough space in her tiny room to even put it together.

  3. I want to get my son a kind of cabin bed where he could have a little sofa underneath but they are so expensive aren’t they. My auntie made a type of princess canopy over my cousins bed when we were younger. It looked magical

  4. I like the idea of multi-functional furniture for kids. The cabin bed is a great idea as it also serves as a desk

Good luck with the move, it’s amazing how much stuff you need to buy when you move. A cabin bed seems like a good option as it’s such a great space saver x

  6. Something sturdy….I have lost count of the times mine have broken their drawers by stuffing too much in them

  7. Sorry to hear your landlord is selling up but fingers crossed all being well with the new place it sounds like it could have been a bit of a blessing in disguise! My two need new beds too and both want cabin beds. My daughter found one that had a den underneath which she of course now insists she needs lol! My son wants one with a desk and futon underneath so he can put his xbox under there lol!

  8. We are in the same predicament as we need to sort our kids rooms this year and they each need fresh furniture.
