American Eskimo dogs, bulldogs, pugs, and Newfoundlands are pets that have temperaments especially suitable for families with young children. Families with small children need to be well-informed regarding what dog breeds will be best around the kids.
While other factors are important to consider (location, size of home, owner’s work hours, allergies), finding a gentle dog that plays well with children should be a major priority for young families. The following breeds are especially well-suited for families with children.
* American Eskimo – These white and fluffy dogs are primarily companion dogs, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). They are great watchdogs and protective over their families, and are known for having a playful yet gentle temperament.
* Bernese Mountain Dog – The AKC describes Bernese Mountain Dogs as gentle and easygoing, great pets for families. They are calm, with an even temper, but can sometimes be excessively shy.
* Boston Terrier- These compact, muscular dogs are easy to train and gentle, deemed great companions by the AKC. Boston terriers love to play, and they always want to be with people. Their small stature makes them especially suitable for young children in the home.
* Bearded Collie – While bearded collies are not known for being great watch dogs, they are good for families looking for an affectionate and outgoing pet. They are playful and interact well with children and other pets, but some of them can be a bit bossy.

* Golden Retriever – One of the most well-known family pets, the golden retriever is a friendly, intelligent, and extremely loyal dog. They are fairly easy to train, and while they do need a good amount of exercise, they are calm and even keeled when they have gotten enough activity.
* Pekingese – The AKC describes Pekingese as affectionate, intelligent, and good-natured. Many pekignese can actually be feisty and stubborn, making them not the first choice of a perfect family pet; however, their obstinance makes them very devoted to their owners. Once they’re attached to their owners, they are strongly loyal and calm.
* Australian Shepherd – With their “strong guarding instincts” (AKC), aussies are very loyal. They are known to be good with children, although they can be fearful of strangers. They constantly desire to be near their owners.
* Pugs – The AKC says that pugs’ “reason for living is to be near their people and to please them.” Pugs are very outgoing, including with children. They are small, which makes them safe for small children, and tend to be gentle and lovable.
* Bulldog – Bulldogs form very strong bonds with children and become protective. They are well-known for being great family pets.
* Newfoundland – Newfoundlands are large dogs with extremely sweet dispositions. They have been touted for the benevolence and for being great with children, and they are easily considered one of the gentlest dog breeds in existence.
Families should always keep in mind that while breeds do share similar characteristics regarding their temperaments, each dog is different and it is up to the owner to train the dog properly. Most dogs can be made good family pets if they have gentle (yet firm) owners. You should also remember the vital ways to care for an ageing dog as they do grow up and get old.

I think a lot depends on the handling of each dog as a pup, too. Early socialising makes a world of difference.
Dogs can be so friendly, loveable and loyal. A commitment and become part of the family. So choosing one to suit the family is a big responsibility. Being informed is important. Dog training is important. Becoming a dog owner requires preparation. Some may have some experience perhaps having grown up with a dog in the family.
Watching how others interact with their pet dog can be enlightening. Some television programmes can be really very informative, and helpful. Research / investigate. There are so, so many dog breeds. Considering size, temperament, space within the home, exercise area outdoors, etc. All aspects which may have an impact on dog ownership experience, and quality of life for family, children and pet dog. A long term relationship / commitment.
