I managed to read quite a bit in August so this reading wrap up may be quite long. That being said..I didn’t manage to complete my TBR for finishing series as I found myself in a slump (read all about my August TBR here). Too much dystopian/YA filling my brain so I decided to give a few other books on my TBR a go.
So what did I read in August?
(All books can be found on Amazon, by using this affiliate link to buy, I will earn a few pence. All book titles below link to Goodreads)
Right at the tail end of July but after my most recent reads, I managed to read Children Who Kill by Carol Anne Davis which I gave 3 stars – a lot of it was already widely known – and I also read The Fade Out: Vol 1 which I gave 5 stars to – it was my first real graphic novel and I loved it. I can’t wait for the next one!
I managed to finish Harm by Hugh Fraser on August 1st as I desperately tried to wrap up my Agatha Christie reads from the month before. I gave it 4 stars as I found it a really interesting story and a great debut from a fantastic actor.
I then went onto Insurgent and Allegiant. I found Insurgent okay, a little boring in places but it was definitely a lot better than Allegiant. Yes, I am one of those people who really dislikes the ending.
Next I tried another graphic novel which would have worked perfectly in my July TBR, the graphic novel version of Agatha Christie’s Murder On The Orient Express. I gave this four stars as it was interesting to see the tale told in this way.
I chose to pick up The Maze Runner series next: The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure. All got 4 stars from me. I’m annoyed I watched the film first as I found myself picking out bits in the book that didn’t happen in the film or how they’d changed certain characters. I’ve recently seen the trailer for The Scorch Trials and I have noticed that they’ve completely done away with a major plot point by the looks of it – not too happy about that! All in all, this is a great series but the ending left me feeling a little flat.
I then picked up three Penguin Little Black Classics: The Wife Of Bath by Geoffrey Chaucer which I gave five stars as I love Chaucer, Anthem For Doomed Youth which I gave 4 stars and Christina Rossetti’s poems which I couldn’t find on Goodreads – I would give this five stars as she is my favourite poet of all time.
Next up was a fantastic debut from Alison Baillie, Sewing The Shadows Together which gripped me from start to finish. It shows the power of a good synopsis as I saw it mentioned in a Facebook group I am in and instantly knew I needed to read it – which I did once it had been delivered to my Kindle ten minutes later. I can’t wait to see what she has in store in the future!
My Mum passed along a (very old) Casualty book to me to have a flick through which I did before taking to the charity shop. It was okay, a trip down memory lane from when I was younger.
I then picked up Just What Kind Of Mother Are You? by Paula Daly which was recommended to me by Laura over at Petit Moi Big World. I loved this and gave it five stars. It was fascinating, gripping and I can’t wait to read more from the author.
Finally – and bringing us into September – I started my September reading a day earlier and picked up Second To Nun by Alice Loweecey which I received for review via Netgalley. I gave it three stars, it was an easy read but I was a little disappointed with the ending as it seemed just that little bit too obvious. I would have liked to have seen it explained in more detail as it all seemed incredibly rushed. I would definitely check out other books by the same author but I would be hoping for a slightly more surprising ending next time.
What did you read in August? Have you written a reading wrap up? I’d love to read it!

How do you read so much, think I got through most of the Lux series in August and that was it haha! x
I watched The Maze Runner last week before realising it was a book. Usually like to read books before seeing films but looking forward to reading the series!
I am so jealous of you being able to read all those books, I can’t find the time to read one book these days x
Wow you got through so many! I think ive managed two books! x
Well done on reading so many book! I didn’t read any last month, I don’t read books unless i’m on holiday haha x
I’m jealous you have read so much, I never get to read anymore!
You have had a very busy month. I think I would enjoy Agatha Christie’s Murder On The Orient Express. I may try and give it a read this month.
That’s a lot of reading for one month. I really must get back into reading I think. Thank you for the reviews x
Jeez you read a lot!! I’m lucky if i have time/opportunity to read one book every other month! X
I read the maze runner trilogy a few years back and have been avoiding the films because they never match up do they? I desperately want to get back into reading as much as I used to. An hospital appointment of mine was running an hour late the other day and I picked a book off the shelf to read, I need to order it to find out what happened!!
What Kind Of Mother Are You? seems like a book I’d read. I don’t really read much these days though, wish I could. Well done on reading so much!
I’m actually forcing myself to read more, will check these out!

I wish I got more chance to read these days. I am actually re-reading a Discovery of Witches which is probably my fave book at the minute.
I am SOOOOOOO jealous!! I’ve been a voracious book reader all my life, but have not managed to finish a single one since the night about started with my youngest. *sob*
That’s a lot of reading for one month. I don’t read much anymore. I don’t have the attention span for it. It’s a shame cause I loved reading.
Just What Kind Of Mother Are You is on my Amazon Wishlist as it sounds so good x
Impressive! I didnt touch books since like last year and thats embarrasing! Thanks for inspiring me 😉
My TBR list grows every time I read your reading lists! I’ve just added Just what kind of mother are you to my list!
