When it came to buying our last sofa, I can totally blame baby brain – or rather pregnancy brain. Finding out we were moving into a new place within a month of Jack’s birth and winning a substantial amount of money in a competition meant that we could afford to buy ourselves some nice stuff for the new place. On that list was a brand new sofa. The day we went to buy it, I was having some stomach pains which I realised later had been the start of labour pains..oops. I kept wanting to sit down and we eventually picked a three seater sofa with electric recliner capabilities and an manual reclining armchair. Did I mention that the sofa was cream?
As you can imagine with it being almost four years since I purchased it, it has seen better days. No matter how much you clean it, a cream sofa is never going to look good as new with a toddler around. Add to that the bits that are broken from Jack jumping on the sofa and friends throwing themselves down on it and you can see that we are in need of a new one.
But how we do we pick the best one? Fabric is so difficult to clean so leather automatically seems like the perfect choice. But then leather gets so hot in the summer and you end up sticking to it – no matter which way we look at it, they all have their pros and cons. We are pretty sure we would like a corner sofa but what material – if fabric, what colour?
What will go with our decor? Our decor is quite simple – cream walls and an awful brownish carpet. Our cream sofa worked well with the decor but not so well with the grubby toddler hands and destructive toddler feet. I think a darker colour would work well overall so a darker fabric or a leather sofa would have to do.
I’m definitely edging towards a fabric sofa despite it being harder to clean than a leather sofa. I find them much more comfortable and I think they also look nicer. They are much easier to add accessories too as well – decorative cushions look much nicer on a fabric sofa. I’ve been looking at the sofas available on the Furniture Village website and there is so much to choose from. We visited another brand when I was pregnant and I wasn’t happy with the overall service so I’m looking elsewhere this time around. There are a multitude of fabric corner sofas available and quite a few in a darker colour, although I have found myself falling for a couple of the white and cream ones.
I find shopping for furniture so hard and it is so frustrating when it is an essential item for the house such as this. I always find that I either like plenty of things and can’t choose between them or I don’t like anything – shopping with me can be a nightmare! I wish I could just wave a magic wand and have it all done for me – yet I probably wouldn’t be happy with that either!
I’m still unsure of exactly what I am going to go for but at least I’ve got some ideas. What type of sofa have you got?

We have a real leather sofa but only because we own a Newfoundland. If given a choice I would opt for a fabric one… much softer and comfy in my opinion.
Definitely comfier but leathers more practical – tough decisions, sofa buying haha x
We used to have a leather sofa but like you say, sticking to it in the summer was awful. I used to try put a throw on it but it used to slide off! Our three seater leather sofa’s cushions went flat and there was no way of plumping them up so we kept our two seater leather sofa and bought a fabric three seater. I prefer the fabric one but after two years of the pesky dog sneaking onto it, it is starting to smell now. Having one of each type suits our lifestyle.
That’s a really good idea, best of both worlds then!
