Moving into a new house is exciting, whether this is your first or third time. However, it can also be pretty stressful and overwhelming. From the moment you get the keys, you probably feel very rushed, trying to move everything to your new place while remembering all the important things you need to tick off along the way. Some things can wait, but there are many tasks that are vital within the first 48 hours. The first few days of moving home are going to shape how comfortable, safe and organised your life is going to be moving forward. Before you get wrapped up in unboxing everything and sitting down to enjoy your new space, there are a few important things that are worth doing first. To help you on your journey, here are some practical things you need to do in the first 48 hours of moving house.

#1 Secure your home

You never know how many old keys are floating around, so it is important that you spend a little time changing the locks on all the exterior doors, and even windows if necessary. Making sure everything feels secure for you and your family.

#2 Find all important switches and information

Locate all important switches and information, such as where you can shut off the water, gas and electricity in an emergency. Make sure there are working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Test the barriers and replace them if necessary. It can give you great peace of mind and help prevent any costly damage to know where all these things are and that they work properly.

#3 Deep clean the property

Conduct a thorough deep cleaning before you unpack everything in the property, even if your new home looks clean at a glance. Many people opt for professional services, like Enviro Clean, to ensure that the carpets are cleaned to a high standard before moving in. You never know how others treated their home and what kind of foot traffic came in and out of the house. This is especially important if they had pets and children, and if you have them too. You want your home to be safe and hygienic.

#4 Set up internet, utilities and essential services

Contact all of the necessary service providers that you need to get yourself up and running. Utilities being the first, as they will need to know when you moved in and who is responsible for the costs. The Internet is also an important one, as this can take a couple of weeks to get set up with internet providers. This will make it easier to get things done in your new home, and will keep the family happy too.

#5 Assess the property for issues

Assess the property for any issues. Look for faulty outlets, squeaky floors, warped walls, leaks, low water pressure, strange noises, or windows that don’t close properly. You can begin a list that will help you to determine what work in the property needs doing to keep it safe and prevent any bigger issues down the line.

There is a lot more to moving than just transporting boxes from your old property to your new home. You want to create security, comfort and confidence so you can have peace of mind and actually enjoy your new space.
