Changing Jack’s Bedroom Into A More Grown Up Space

Collaborative Post

Jack is going to be turning 13 this year and has been craving a more grown up space when it comes to his bedroom for quite some time now. He does still like some things like Pokemon that he has liked for years and he is still not a big fan of tidying his bedroom at all but he is keen for it to be more teenage and less childlike as the months go by. This is something we are keen to help him with once funds and time allows – it’s not just going to be a one day job!

Ever since we moved in, we have been speaking about what we’d like to do to his room and asked him what he would like. Jack is in the smallest room as Olivia had the bigger of the two once we moved in. This is due to Hannah eventually moving in with her once she moves out of our room. He also has the box above the stairs to deal with so we need to incorporate that into any plans we make. Storage is an issue so we want plenty of that and plenty of space but we don’t want to compromise on comfort either.

We’ve been looking at a divan bed for him. Not only would it be a decent size but it also offer some storage alongside being super comfortable. We want him to have a bed that is comfortable, spacious but doesn’t take over the room and one of these would be perfect. His bed now is falling apart but since we are going to be upgrading not only the bed but the size he has once we do up his room, we’re reluctant to change it just yet!

We are lucky enough that he does still (sort of) like to spend time with us instead of being in his room ALL THE TIME but he deserves a space that he would love to spend time in. Here are a few of our ideas, alongside upgrading his single bed to a double:

Plenty Of Storage

We know that we are unable to move the box covering the top of the stairs but there is a small cupboard on top of that right now that we are keen to rip out so that we can utilise the space in another way. Whilst, yes, that does provide storage, there is a possibility for much more storage without it being there! We’ve also discussed plenty of shelving for his little bits and pieces once his wall has been painted.

Incorporate His Interests Into The Theme

Now I mentioned he is still into Pokemon which I love as both him and his Dad have built up quite a collection of stuff. We’d love to incorporate his love of that into the room. He is also a geography nerd and has a rug that Steve bought him from his work and a world map which Olivia bought him for Christmas that we want to have on show.

Keep His Favourite Tech

He’s an (almost) teenage boy so he loves his tech, especially gaming. We currently have an Xbox in our room that they are allowed to play and a Switch but we’re considering getting an extra console so that the older kids can each have one in their room. I’m also keen to get him a laptop or PC at some point soon so he stops asking to borrow mine! He does have a school one but obviously he cannot use that for anything apart from school work.

These are a just a few ways we will be changing Jack’s bedroom into a more grown up, teenage friendly place. After the multiple moves in the last few years, it will be nice for him to be able to put his own stamp on somewhere that we can finally call home.

We have been living here for just over a year but have still got so much to do – we moved in when I was 7.5 months pregnant with Hannah and its taken a while to get ourselves on our feet. A couple of rooms are fully done now so we are hoping to be all sorted by the end of the summer holidays.

Have you ever upgraded your child’s bedroom from a childlike theme to a space that is much more grown up? I would love to hear any suggestions you have – have I missed anything?
