I was recently contacted to see if I would like to review the book Snapped by Deborah Vines. In 2019, I read a lot of non-fiction and wanted to read more memoirs. It seemed a little different from my usual reads so I thought why not?

Synopsis

Snapped! chronicles the author’s brief foray into the world of BDSM, the resultant breakdown of her marriage, and her crazy (and oftentimes humorous) efforts to stay sane in the aftermath—while searching for answers as to why she chose to throw herself down the proverbial rabbit hole. It touches on the psychology of the fetish; sexuality; the many faces of love; addiction and betrayal—and finally, hope and redemption.

About The Author

Deborah recently wrote her memoir, snapped!, chronicles the author’s brief foray into the world of BDSM, the resultant breakdown of her marriage, and her crazy (and oftentimes humorous) efforts to stay sane in the aftermath—while searching for answers as to why she chose to throw herself down the proverbial rabbit hole. My Review

With the author describing it as a cross between 50 Shades of Grey and Eat, Pray, Love, I was interested to see what I would think of the book. We recently went to Boston and I started the book the night before and finished it in the car on the drive there – it really kept me gripped.

I will be honest and say I wasn’t too sure if this book would be for me – but I am trying to be more open in my reading and expanding my reading material. I needn’t have worried though as this kept me gripped throughout. As mentioned in the synopsis, the memoir talks about the authors foray into BDSM after trying it years before, long before she got married. She talks candidly and honestly about her experiences and how it affected her marriage. I felt for the author when her marriage broke down but did feel, from how she described her husband’s reactions to her foray into BDSM, that this may have played a bigger part than she liked to feel and that he liked to admit to.

It was interesting to see how the author grew as a person, not only during the time she was married but also after the breakdown of her marriage, in her interactions with her friends, family and even new romantic conquests. She certainly has some wonderful friends who always seem to have her back.

Overall, I was very impressed with this book. I don’t often read memoirs, much less often with this subject matter also, but I am glad I stepped out of my comfort zone and gave it a try. It is always fascinating to read about other people with different lives to your own and this, in itself, was a really intriguing read.

  1. I will admit that this is not the sort of book I would usually go for, but after reading your review I think it is something I would enjoy as you get to know the author better

  2. I love reading memoirs, autobiographies and biographies in general. I, however, highly dislike the 50 Shades of Grey saga, so it was slightly off-putting to hear that this book is a cross between that and Eat, Pray, Love. I am glad that I read your review till the end though because you actually made this book sound interesting. Have a great day! x

  3. I must admit this is not my usual book (neither is Eat, Pray Love or 50 Shades if I’m honest). But I imagine from real life story it is a lot more gripping. I may add to my TBR pile in 2020.

  4. I’m not sure I have ever read a memoir, so I probably ought to give this a try, and it sounds as if it covers some interesting topics. Mich x

  5. I am not really a reader of memoirs but it sounds like an interesting book

  6. This sounds like such an amazing book to read tbh. I don’t like 50 shades or eat pray love but this review has left me intrigued to read it.
