Is The Grass Always Greener?

A random post from me today – but something that has been playing on my mind.

Jack went to his half term club last week from Wednesday to Friday with a church service which took place on Sunday morning – the half term club was run at a church so I knew and expected there to be a religious aspect. Something that was spoken about on Sunday was the fact that everyone always thinks the grass is greener on the other side; no one is ever truly happy with their lot. There was an analogy – the half term club was based around Aladdin and was saying how Aladdin wasn’t truly happy with his life but neither was Jasmine who seemingly had it all. They both craved something different.

It has had me thinking a lot over the past few days. Why do we do this to ourselves? I mean, I’d never expect anyone to be truly happy with absolutely everything in their lives – you’d have to have the patience of a saint – but then again why are so many people so unsatisfied with what they have?

I’m not going to lie and say I’m completely happy with my life. I’m desperate to lose some weight, I can’t wait to pay off all my debt and I really, really want to move. But these are all achievable things – they just need a little effort. But is that where the problem lies? So many of us have things that we feel we would fulfill our lives – but can we even be bothered to attempt to achieve them?

Or is it a case of the grass is always greener – but it actually isn’t? Would we truly be happy if we managed to achieve everything we set out to – or will we find something else to complain about?

I will admit that I don’t think I’d be truly happy if I managed to lose the weight, clear the debt and move house tomorrow – there will always be something that will come across to niggle at us.

What do you think – do you think anyone can ever be truly happy with everything they have? Or do you think that it is in the human nature to suffer some disappointment or a lack of satisfaction and always be trying to strive for something better? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

  1. So great that this aspect in the church service got you really thinking. We definaitley all think that soemthing else will be better or suit us more, but you’re right, often we are not willing to put in the effort. I seriously need to lose weight as well, it is making me more and more ill and life will definitley be easier and better if I do. Good luck to you on the changes you want to make. Mich x

  2. I think there’s a difference between stuff and things as you put it. And it’s the illusion of happiness comes from those kind of things.
I always believe life is excellent even when there’s things in it I don’t necessarily like. Happiness is often misunderstood and confused with the illusion of perfection. I feel …

  3. It’s so true and I think that the grass is not really greener on the other side – perfection doesn’t exist in life and there will always be things we need to work on. Happiness is key though and should be the focus 🙂

I’m with you on the losing weight and paying off debts. I think that we aren’t always aware of what happens in others live and were we see them being perfect there is always something wrong that they wish they could change.

  5. I think there are always things we feel like we could be doing better, the what ifs. However I also think there are many ways we can be perfectly happy as well.

  6. I have often wondered about this too. I think if we get everything we want now, there will always be something else. We will never reach the greener side

  7. Personally I don’t think its a bad thing to strive for something better, even if you got what you wanted. Its like a motivation to improve your lifestyle I guess.

I don’t always think the grass is greener, as you said all the things I want to achieve are well within my control even if they will take time and effort to do x

I don’t think that TV and Social Media helps. Things being rubbed in peoples faces to what they have, though, not all what you see is the truth, which can make people crave more. Though for me, I always look at big houses and wish I had that, but then who knows, that may not bring happyness. I know someone who has a massive house, 6 Bedrooms, but he lives alone and is lonely!

  10. I regularly think about this because I’d always like more ‘stuff’. But then I look at pop stars who have everything and then they go off the rails because they are so desperately unhappy. I just think that craving something other than what we have is part of the human condition.

  11. I once read something that has stuck with me. It may have been on a meme or something but it has changed my mindset so much – “The grass is greener where you water it.” Anytime that I feel like I am not where I want to be in life I think of this and it has helped my perspective immensely! I do agree that it’s just human nature overall but if we can focus on contentment and gratitude our mindset shifts a lot! x

  12. I think, to a point, you have to learn to be happy with your lot! Yes it’s great to strive for things, but you have to appreciate where you are too.
