Unfortunately, life rarely goes to plan. Often a crisis comes up to shock us at the worst times. Or, even more upsettingly, the best times. When everything is going well, and we’re totally unprepared for something to go wrong. Accidents on the road, harsh weather causing damage at home, dangerous situations, the kids being involved in something scary, impending financial doom and being the victim of a crime are just some of the crises that we might face.
We try always to be prepared. To take precautions to ensure that these kinds of situations can’t be too disastrous for us, but in truth, you never know how things are going to work out until they do. Even with all of our precautions and preparations, when we face a sudden and unexpected crisis, of any nature, most of us first turn to panic. Then perhaps anger. We might end on terrible sadness. These emotions limit our ability to respond. They stop us from making confident and rational decisions, and they don’t allow us to reach the best outcome. If you want to do that, you need to stay calm. Which, of course, is much easier said than done. So here are some tips to help you keep calm in a crisis.
Know Where to Get Help
When something terrible or shocking happens, one of the first things that many of us feel, is alone. We don’t know what to do, we have no one to turn to, and there’s no help available. But, this is rarely true. In any given situation, there is usually some help available. You just need to know where to turn. Help might come in the form of some of the best best criminal lawyers, your insurance agent, a doctor or the emergency services. Sometimes help is just turning to a friend for a chat.
The heat of the moment is a terrible time to make any kind of decisions. When something unexpected happens, and you find yourself panicking and thinking the worst, take a step back. Move away from the situation, sleep on it if you can or at least take a few minutes to calm down quietly and think. You’ll see solutions much more clearly.
Make a Plan
Having a plan can make everything seem better. When you’ve made a plan, you feel like you’ve already taken action. The steps are laid out clearly in front of you, and you can begin to move forward, either fixing things, correcting mistakes or moving on and dealing with any consequences.
Stay Positive
We see negatives so easily. They are clear to us instantly to the point that they are all that we can see. But, there are usually positives if you look for them. Even if it’s just that you’ve stayed calm and done the right thing after.
Avoid What-Ifs
What if is a terrible thing to ask yourself. It’s all too easy to get caught up in the what-ifs and to fill your life with regrets. Stop. You can’t change what has happened, so don’t ask “what if?”
