Life Begins At 40, They Say – What’s The Dating Scene Like?

Whilst I am not even thirty yet, I have friends that are older than me. Many of my mum friends are 40+ especially those who have kids at school with Jack. I’ve also worked with many people over the years that are older than me and have become really close friends. Quite a few of these long time friends are single too and have told me many a tale of their dating experiences, especially their use of older dating sites. Whilst they may not have found The One just yet, they have had plenty of fun trying to find him along the way. For many of these friends, this has been their first experience in online dating as most of them were in long term relationships beforehand, having broken up with their ex partner or suffering a sad loss.

Online dating can be daunting at any age but especially so if you are a little older so it is important to remember that these can be extremely positive places. I myself (if I was single, of course) would much rather use online dating to find an older man than someone of my own age as I’d actually want to talk to someone mature and who is interested in more than just one thing, someone that wants to have a conversation and a nice time.

Should my mum ever start dating again – she’s 58 and was with my dad for almost forty years before he passed away last year, he was obviously The One for her- then I’d be helping her find a positive happy site like this to look for a like minded individual. However I don’t think she is anywhere near ready just yet and I don’t think I am either, I don’t think I would like it too much!

A common theme I’ve noticed in my older friends dating journeys is that many of the women seem to be opting for younger men, whether they are slightly younger or by quite a gap. This has only seemed to be in recent years though – I’ve only really ever known age gaps where the man is older – three years between me and Steve, 19 years between my mum and Dad, 6 years between my father in law and mother in law, ten years between Steve’s aunt and uncle. It’s just what I am used to – however many of my female friends are giving younger men a try – and why not? Why should the men get all the fun in an age gap relationship?

As I mentioned there are plenty of older women dating younger men in my life right now and I think its great. Whilst these women may not necessarily meet ‘The One’, they can certainly have plenty of fun along the way and why shouldn’t they? The road to love never did run smooth – and who is to say everyone is definitely looking for love anyway? Some people just want someone to go out and have fun with, some people just want a bit of affection, some people simply want the physical side of a relationship. The great thing about dating sites is that you can outline straight away exactly what you are looking for from a relationship or connection and everyone knows where they stand. This means you can meet like minded people who are looking for exactly the same things. Whether they are the same age as you or twenty years younger, who cares? All that matters is that everyone is happy!

I can honestly say that the women I know dating younger men are very happy – they are having fun and that is exactly what life should be about. Whilst these relationships may not always last the distance, both parties are getting what they want from it and everyone’s happy. I call that a win win situation, don’t you? Whether this is a relationship or a simple friendship where they accompany each other on days out, as long as everyone is in agreement about it then who can complain?

The dating scene for over 40’s has certainly changed over the years – and in a positive way. It wasn’t too long ago that there were only a few dating sites available – and it seemed like the world and its wife were on there and they were all about 20 and looking for one thing in particular. Now there are specific sites for what people are looking for – so older women can meet younger men on one, mature men and women can meet others on another, people who are only looking for the physical side of a relationship can use another. It couldn’t be any easier to meet someone these days – and there doesn’t seem to be a taboo anymore about dating when older. I remember when I was younger that the newspapers would always be writing about older celebrities dating in a negative way – I’m so glad this doesn’t seem to happen as much anymore!

The dating scene for older people couldn’t be any better – and I’m grateful for my older friends that they’ve got such fantastic resources. Have you ever used a mature dating site?
