5 Ways To Renovate Your Home On A Budget

Renovating your home can be quite stressful sometimes and the prices you pay for the different renovations can sometimes be quite extortionate. Whether you are simply doing up one room or you are having a whole extension built, the bill for renovating your home can rise and rise if you don’t set a specific budget and stick to it. But how can you renovate your home on a budget?

There is a number of ways you can complete work on your house without it hitting your wallet too hard. I have seen far too many friends and family members see their costs creep up and there is nothing they can do about it as the work has already started and needs to be completed. Here are my five top tips on how to renovate your home on a budget..

PLAN & RESEARCH BEFOREHAND

Before starting any work or paying out for anything, plan exactly what you want doing and how much it should cost. Set two budgets – the price you would like it done for and the price you could stretch too if needs be. Knowing what budget you have to work with before starting any work means you can opt for certain products or work forces who cost a little less than others may do.

Researching is also key. Whilst you want to make sure you are sticking to your budget, do your research on everything. If the labour or products are cheap but the product or work the labour produce is shoddy, you’ll have to pay out for this to be rectified which in turn will hit your budget hard. Researching reviews online and asking for recommendations through word of mouth will help you to make an informed decision where you get both the best quality and price for you and your budget.

FLOORING

You don’t need to go for premium flooring products with exorbitant prices.  You can make a sound investment with a big impact using cheaper laminate flooring that is non-branded but manufactured well with at least 8mm thickness to give you a strong and sturdy floor.

Flooring is such a big thing when it comes to renovating your home – people often change from carpet to laminate or laminate to carpet – so it’s important to opt for what will work for you and your family. Researching the best laminate flooring deals can help you avoid paying those exorbitant prices for products that are just as good quality as the more expensive out there.

UPDATE YOUR SOFT FURNISHINGS

This tip sounds so simple but it really does help. Like the lighting, simply updating existing things within your house is an easy way to renovate your home on a budget. When other people walk in, they more than likely won’t realise that the sofa sitting there is your old sofa that you got recovered for a bargain price. They’ll notice the new curtains that you picked up cheaply from a high street store.

These are all very simple things that you can do but they can really make a room look entirely different without much effort or cost at all – your house looks completely updated for a fraction of the cost than if you were to buy a brand new sofa or brand new furniture.

GOOD LIGHTING

Lighting is key when it comes to making your home look fresh and new. This doesn’t mean go out and buy new lighting but simply finding out what suits each room best to make it seem open and inviting. Opting for softer lighting rather than harsher lighting in some rooms will make the room seem brand new even if you haven’t changed that much within the room. Rooms like your kitchen and your bathroom should be bright and airy so choosing good lighting is key for these rooms. Obviously other rooms in the house will depend on different things – your living room may get the sun streaming in or you may be covered over by trees – it is important that you choose the best for each room. Simple research of the best choices will help.

ASK AROUND

You can find some great renovation ideas out there on the web –  asking around for recommendations whether that be through the web or in real life or asking if your loved ones have anything left over from their renovations can also help you keep to a specific budget.

How many of us have bought multiple tins of paint for something before and not even used half of them? You will probably find that some of your friends and family have some different materials hanging around that you could make use of and that they are probably desperate to get rid of. I know that my parents have a few tins of paint left over from when they had the hallway painted – I will definitely be asking for those should I feel the need to paint the house in the near future.

You don’t just have to ask your friends or family either. Asking around at local car boot sales, local selling pages or even on Freecycle can often see you land some barely used and sometimes even unopened products that will be so helpful to you in renovating your home. Just a recent look at my own local pages sees some unused paint, some leftover paving stones and furniture being offered up for free or at a very minimal price. Keeping your eyes and ears to the ground is crucial in helping you bag some good deals and keep your renovation costs down.

These are just five of the ways you can renovate your home on a budget – you can find some more here. Some may seem super simple but they are so easy to forget when you get swept up in the whole renovation process. If looking for some inspiration, perhaps look at house refurbs near London too.

We all want our renovations to last and be good quality but that doesn’t mean we have to compromise on price as well. It is possible to have a fantastic renovation whilst also keeping to a set budget – what tips do you have?
