The Jungle Book is one of our favourite tales in this household so when offered the chance to review a brand new edition which has all of Kipling’s Jungle Book stories and is beautifully illustrated by Ian Beck (who also illustrated the gorgeous cover below), I had to say yes. I’ve been reading a few pages a night to Jack and he is really enjoying the stories. The Jungle Books is a stunning book!
Synopsis
The adventures of Mowgli, the young man raised by wolves in the jungles of Central India, and his friends Baloo the bear, Bagheera the panther and Kaa the python, as they face the arch villain Shere Khan the tiger, have become so popular that they have achieved an almost mythical status throughout the world. They were collected by Kipling in The Jungle Book and its sequel, The Second Jungle Book, which also contain other stories set in India which prominently feature animals, such as the well-known ‘Rikki-Tikki-Tavi’, which describes the struggles of a mongoose against venomous cobras.
Here presented with brand-new illustrations by Ian Beck, these hugely popular tales, inspired by ancient fables and Kipling’s own experiences in India, form a vivid account of the relationship between humans and nature, and will continue to inspire readers young and old.
RRP: £7.99, Age Range: 12+, Pub Date: 19th April 2016
Well…the Jungle Book stories are well known the world over but its always nice to own a complete collection of something for yourself, isn’t it? Especially when they have such beautiful illustrations! Obviously Jack is a little young to read this by himself but I’ve been reading him a little each night and he has really been enjoying it – he loves the Disney film and is excited for the new film so getting to bring the characters to life in his head is a real treat.
As I’m reading a few pages at a time with him, I don’t think I am taking in as much as he is so I will definitely be reading the whole book to myself once I have completed it with Jack. You can never be too old for the Jungle Book, right?
We love our edition and it is holding pride of place on Jack’s bookshelves. I hope to see more from the illustrator in the future too.
