Life Lately // Applying For Infants School

Applications for infants school open tomorrow in our area and I want to make sure I get it in as soon as possible, to make sure I know that I’ve done it – leaving it to the last minute is not an option in case I miss the closing date. We already know which infants school we want Jack to go to, the one his nursery is based at, but we still need to apply.

Over the morning and afternoon sessions at nursery, there are around 45 children. There are only 60 spaces in Reception at this school and there are two other nurseries in the area with children of Jack’s age group in – definitely more than 15 children. If everyone applies for this infants school, some people are going to lose out. It starts the whole worrying process again, I worried constantly after applying for Jack’s nursery place and was so relieved when he got in. Now I’ve got it all to go through again and I won’t find out for months.

Jack has settled in so well since his first day at nursery and made so many good friends. I really hope he gets in and so do all of his friends as I attended the school when I was little and it is fantastic. I have complete faith in the staff that they will do the best they can for my child and his education. He has been having such a fantastic time – learning so much more, becoming more confident, making new friends, even sitting with an owl to have his photo taken as seen above. I’d hate to have to take him away from all that and if I am being honest, I haven’t even considered another school as that would mean going out of the village – and I don’t drive.

He has been getting on so well – he is really doing well with his phonics and apparently his mathematics skills are pretty good for his age group too. He is perhaps not as good at the more practical things though – if this continues into later on in school, we may consider a private tutor. We’re not too worried right now but once he is fully immersed in the education system properly, it is definitely something we may consider.

I’m keeping my fingers, toes and everything crossed in the hope that he gets in but perhaps I am being silly and I don’t have to worry at all. Hopefully him already attending the nursery will work in his favour. Who knows?

  1. Fingers and toes crossed that he gets into the school that you want. It must be a very stressful time x

  2. Good luck it is so stressful waiting hear I felt so sick waiting to hear where my daughter was going, I was worse with her primary school, than I was when we went through it all again last year with her secondary school application x

  3. I shall keep my fingers and toes crossed for you it must be so worrying especially as he has made friends already.

  4. Surely the fact he’s at the nursery already will count in his favour? I have all this stress to look forward to as my eldest is only two right now. Doesn’t sound fun.

  11. Oh good luck! We are in the same position – Ava goes to the nursery of the school we want her to go to, but we are not actually in the catchment area. I really don’t want her to go to our local school at all so I am pretty worried! x

  12. Best of luck! Sounds like a stressful time for you but hopefully it gets sorted without any problems.

  13. I feel quite stressed from reading this because that’ll be us soon, well Rowan is only 16 months old but always thinking forward. I’m sure when I was little and starting school (about 100 years ago) that you automatically just went to your local School (I may have made this up), It worries me thinking about having to apply to go to certain Schools, etc. I don’t drive so I always worry we’ll be given the School that’s the furthest away.

Anyway, good luck with it all and I really hope the outcome is exactly as you want it to be.
