4 Health Lessons You Only Learn When You Get Older

Collaborative Post

When we’re young, we feel like masters of the universe. We live under the illusion that we’re immortal and nothing can touch us.

It’s actually quite a nice place to be. We have all the time in the world ahead of us, and we can take it easy. Unfortunately, time has a nasty habit of catching up with all of us. Eventually, we start getting older and it forces us to look at our bodies differently. Perhaps they won’t be around forever after all.

In this post, we take a look at some of the health lessons you only learn when you get older.

Overdoing Exercise Is A Bad Idea

While a little bit of exercise seems to be good for people, doing too much can take its toll. So many athletes spend their senior decades of nursing injuries they acquired in their twenties. It can have a massive impact on their quality of life.

The benefits of exercise follow an inverse-U relationship. Doing none at all is bad for your health, but so too is running an ultramarathon every day.

There appears to be a sweet spot – an optimal level of activity in the middle. However, when you’re young and keen, it can be hard to appreciate this.

The Body Is Fragile

Another misconception of youth is that the body is a robust machine. Unfortunately, it’s not.

Chad Stavley is an attorney who deals with injured clients every day. He knows from experience that damage to the body is hard to reverse once it occurs.

He’s reflecting what a lot of older people know instinctively. Taking care of the body – and even wrapping it in proverbial cotton wool – is vital.

Youth Is A Luxury

When you’re young and you don’t have any health problems, you don’t think about the state of your body. It’s just there in the background doing its job. There’s no need to think about it.

However, as you get older, problems begin to creep in. Your muscles feel tired and your joints start to ache. And you don’t have as much energy as you once did.

You soon come to realise that what you’re experiencing now is the norm and that youth was a luxury. Looking back, you can see that it was a lot of fun, but an outlier in your overall experience.

Keep Your Diet In Check

You can eat pretty much whatever you like when you’re young. Your body’s metabolism soaks it up – no problem.

But as you get older, your cells aren’t as able to cope with the foods that you give them. And they can start malfunctioning.

Keeping your diet in check, therefore, becomes more important as you get older. It’s not necessarily about “dieting,” but just choosing foods most likely to support your health over the long-term.

Common dietary choices include beans, greens, berries, and nuts. Sugar and processed food are out.

What health lessons did you learn as you got older? Are you doing things differently now compared to when you were young?
