Getting a dog for the first time is always exciting. But, many people overlook the fact owning a dog takes a lot of time and effort. If you don’t know what you’re doing, this can quickly feel overwhelming. But, it can be more straightforward once you use a few tips. A few of these could help quite a bit.

Pick the Right Breed

One of the most important decisions you’ll need to make when you’re getting your dog is figuring out which breed you’ll get. You should spend a decent bit of time on this, as different breeds will have different needs. The likes of huskies will be quite active and need noticeably more exercise than other breeds, for example.

Thankfully, this usually isn’t as complicated a decision as you’d think. Focus on the breeds that can best fit within your lifestyle. If you don’t have a lot of time to exercise your dog, for example, a husky mightn’t be the best choice for you.

Look for Help

As much as you’ll know about looking after your dog, you wouldn’t know everything. There’ll be times when they get sick or hurt, so you’ll need to find a vet you can trust. Spend some time looking into your options ahead of time so you can find the best one for your needs. Thankfully, this shouldn’t have to take too long.

And then there are the times when you’ll need a dog day care or similar help. You could end up going on vacation and your family mightn’t be in a position to care for your dog, for example. Have one on-hand for when you might need them.

Train & Socialize Your Dog

Training your dog is one of the first steps you should take when you get them, as it helps to prevent more than a few accidents and incidents in the future. You wouldn’t want your dog going to the toilet everywhere around the house, for example. Focusing on house training and basic commands is a great start here.

Don’t forget to socialize your dog while you’re at it. Your dog could be nervous around new people at the start, for example, so it’ll take some time for them to adjust. They might even feel the same way around other dogs. Take your time to help them with this.

Bond With Your Dog

One of the more important areas you’ll need to put time and effort into is bonding with your dog, especially when you first get them. It helps them start to trust and feel safe around you and helps you build a stronger relationship with them. Start on this as early as you can so your new furry friend can get comfortable quickly.

This doesn’t have to be hard, and it could be a lot more fun than you’d think. Playing with them, spending time training with them, or even just relaxing on the couch with them could be more than enough to start bonding with your dog.
