I’ve been talking to my friends about my work life balance a lot recently. I have been finding it difficult to juggle the two around everything else I have to. Not only do I have my freelance work and blog work, I obviously have Jack and Steve to think about, the housework, the school run, seeing family and actually doing things for myself in my own leisure time. Sometimes some things just have to give.
I joined the social team at my local Slimming World group to not only motivate me to lose more weight but also to get me out of the house. This does mean Monday is mostly a write off work wise once I’ve dropped Jack at school, picked him up and gone to Slimming World for both groups but I do still try to get some – and a little housework – done.
Calibre have recently been working on a quiz talking about peoples work/life balance. Whether you work in an office with loads of other people or you work from home by yourself, plenty of us struggle to balance it all whilst others seem to float by effortlessly without a care in the world. The quiz asks questions such as how much you leave your desk, how stressful your commute is, how many smoke breaks you take, what food you tend to eat at work. The answers are suitable for anyone so whether you are an office worker in the Big Smoke or you work from your dining room like me, there will be an answer suitable for you.
Unfortunately according to my results, office life is killing me and I have a life expectancy of 59 years. Whilst this is a fun little quiz, it is quite shocking to see that and has made me realise how I really do need to set some boundaries when it comes to my work life balance. Whilst it is going to be tough to work specific hours whilst Jack is still doing only half a day, I’m hopeful that come September when he goes to school full time I will be able to fit everything in a lot easier and be able to work to specific hours.
An unhealthy work life can be so detrimental and whilst I do make an effort to exercise a lot and make healthy choices, I know that my work habits aren’t as good as they could be and I really need to work on them. Do you think that you have a healthy work life balance?
