Top Tips for Saving for a Trip

Travel isn’t cheap, and whether you’re dreaming of sipping coffee in Paris or hiking through national parks, that dream trip needs some funding.

Saving for a vacation doesn’t have to feel like a second job, though. With a few creative strategies and a little bit of consistency to it, you can build up your travel fund without sacrificing all the fun along the way. Here’s how you can do it.

  1. Name your goal. Firstly, you need to decide where you’re going and roughly how much you’ll need. Give your savings goal a fun name so that you have something to look forward to. Then take it a step further and make a visual tracker. Whether it’s a jar full of coins or a thermometer chart taped to your fridge, watching your savings grow is motivating and satisfying.
  2. Create a travel only stash. Open a separate savings account just for your trip. Whether you’re aiming to supply business class for the first time or you’re just heading to a local RV park, having something separate from your regular money is better than not having anything at all.You can set up automatic transfers. Even $10 to $20 a week adds up overtime. Treat it like a bill you have to pay, because if you wouldn’t skip rent, you shouldn’t skip your travel fund.
  3. Cut your costs, but not your joy. Saving doesn’t mean cutting all of the fun from your life. Swapping your pricey nights out for game nights, backyard barbecues, or movie marathons gives you more room in your travel budget. Instead of ordering take out, try cooking a version of the dish that you would have ordered from in the first place. It’s cheap, it’s fun, and it’s a great way to get excited for your trip.
  4. Sell the things you forgot you owned. Take a week to declutter. You know that guitar you never learn to play? Or the treadmill now functioning as a clothing rack? It’s time to sell it. Whether it’s a garage sale, Facebook marketplace or a resale app, your clutter could be your travel cash. It’s like spring cleaning with a vacation as a reward.
  5. Turn your spare change into plane tickets. There are apps out there to round your dollars, or your bank’s round up feature that allows you to save automatically by rounding up purchases to the nearest dollar and tucking away the extra cents. Buy a coffee for $2.50, It will round up to three and stash that $0.50 for you. It’s a painless way to add up to your savings and it doesn’t grow faster than you’d think. It’s like finding money in the couch cushions but way more useful.
  6. Pick up a side hustle. If you’ve got a little spare time, consider a temporary side hustle. Dog walking, online freelancing, or even tutoring can help. Frame it as a vacation fuel rather than extra work. You’re not just earning, you’re investing in your next biggest adventure.
