Small Changes, Big Changes

Collaborative Post

You’re looking to find a more sustainable, a more environmentally-friendly way to live but implementing those changes and sticking to them are harder than they appear. When you’re looking to change up your daily habits for the better, then you need to make small changes that will far more easily become a part of your everyday life.

In this blog, we take a look at the small things that are going to make a huge difference when it comes to cutting down on plastic and creating a cleaner, greener planet.

It should be the aim of every household and every business to reduce the amount of plastic products that they’re throwing away. From a family home to a giant supermarket, the responsibility falls on all of us. Why? Because study after study highlights the effects that plastic is having on oceans and ocean life, with mountains and mountains of plastic floating around destroying natural underwater habitats and impacting on fish, insects and mammals that live there.

We have the power to make a change and here’s what we can do: for a start stop throwing away plastic bags from the supermarket. Instead re-use them to get your weekly groceries or stick to just using reusable tote bags or bags for life which last a great deal longer.

One of the biggest areas of excessive plastic use is that of packaging. Say no to fruit and vegetables that are wrapped up in clingfilm and plastic trays and instead by your fresh produce loose. There really is no need for the wrapping, so send the message loud and clear to the supermarkets you shop at that it’s time to cut out the excessive use of plastic.

Another thing you might consider is taking your own tubs to fill with fresh meat from the deli. Reusable Tupperware or take away cartons can go straight into the freezer and be used time and time again to replace the pre-packed meat you might usually buy.

Do the same with water bottles, remembering to fill your personal bottle from home and not buying plastic bottles with your lunch. If your water quality isn’t drinking water quality, then you may find some cafes will fill your bottle for free.

Big Changes

You may not feel that these little changes to your shopping, drinking and eating habits amount to much but they lead to big changes. Not only does your personal footprint change but you are sending messages to big business that they need to change too.

Little by little the message is getting out there and plastic is slowly being reduced. While it’s going to take years to put right the mess we’ve made of our seas and oceans if we can all get on board with plastic reduction then we’ll be making a positive start. Commit to these small changes today and they’ll soon become second nature. Reduce plastic use little by little and make a big difference.
