I don’t know about you but my family really suffer during winter. The atmosphere in our house becomes so dry and we’re often left with chapped lips, sore throats and other symptoms of a cold. We really struggle to keep the moisture in and keep ourselves ‘well’ but we’ve got a few ideas on how to do it better this year.

- Drink more. All of us could do with drinking more water and keeping a bottle of water onour side, especially during the night. It keeps us more hydrated and feeling less groggy in the morning.
- Use a vaporizer. Something like the Vicks vaporizer will be helpful in restoring moisture in our house that is lost too easily.
- Work with the heating. If it’s too hot, don’t just throw the covers off – turn the heating down and save some money. If its too cold, wrap up but if you need to put the heating on, do it. I try not to put the heating on every time I get a little cold as it would cost me the earth but I will put it on if I have to.
Jack is four years old now and is at nursery. He seems to pick up every bug that is going round and often passes them to us before they do a second round through us and we finally get rid of them. I know bugs are easy to pick up at school but if we can minimise the chances that would be great – I’m fed up of trying to work from home when I can hardly breathe through a blocked up nose (and I’m sure Steve doesn’t appreciate 12 hour shifts feeling like rubbish too!).
Do you also struggle to keep well in the winter? Apart from the odd bit of hayfever in the summer, I usually go the whole season without getting ill. I can put up with the sniffle from hayfever as that is easily fixed with anti-allergy medication but the constant stream of illness that accompanies the winter season leaves me wishing the season was over before it has even begun. I’m hoping if I put these actions into place I will reduce the amount we get unwell and hopefully make our home atmosphere a little less dry. Do you find your household the same? What are your tips for fighting off that horrible cold?
