Collaborative Post
Taking the plunge into home learning was always going to be a big thing. Jack thrives in a school environment but when it comes to learning at home, he just isn’t interested. However this has, of course, had to change, due to the current climate. So how are we getting on with home learning and what are we doing?
PE with Joe Wicks
Just like most of the country, we are putting Joe Wicks on every morning so Jack can get his physical education in early. He sometimes moans about doing it but ultimately enjoys it in the end. It is amazing to see just how stratospheric Joe’s videos have got these past few days. We’ve heard some good things about some other sports and dancing channels so will certainly be checking those out too!
Phonics and Stuff
Olivia recently got her acceptance letter to Nursery and she’s usually doing three clubs a week, including her Phonics class. I’ve been trying to keep her updated with all, thanks to Facebook groups and Zoom calls. We hope to be back in class soon!
Jack’s home learning pack
Now I don’t know about you but Jack was given a pack of worksheets and stuff like that by his teacher two days before schools closed. He also gets an email every morning telling him what his teacher would like him to do that day. He’s done a few of the sheets now and really enjoys them.
Remote tutoring
This is something we’ve been considering lately and I think it might just be the thing to help him during this time. Tutorhouse have some fab online courses where you can learn online in small groups (on average about 8 children) – this is something I think Jack would really enjoy and learn from as he learns much better when learning with others.
His websites and apps
I’ve spoken on here before about the different websites and apps Jack uses to aid him in his learning. He has been given access to Times Table Rockstars and Purple Mash thanks to his school and he has access to Reading Eggs and Mathseeds, thanks to a previous collaboration. We try to ensure he uses the school approved websites at least once a day and the others around this.
Reading
Jack is a proper little bookworm so he is more than happy to read as asked to by his teachers. He’s currently working his way through the Harry Potter series but is also really enjoying reading non-fiction books right now too.
How are you getting on with teaching your kids at home? Do you have any tried and tested tips that you’d like to share with me?
It sounds like you and the kids are doing well with the work. We’re taking it a bit at a time as it’s hard work policing 3 and working from home. I’m thankful the school has sent work to do.
I recently stopped going to school to start home learning. I’m 17 so the change was big but I quite like it!!! 🙂
I think home educating is a learning curve for many parents across the country, it is great that there are so many resources now out there
Home educating isn’t something many parents will be able to cope with, but we’ve written a list and breakdown for the kids, with books and notepads and games – we’re finding ways to teach in a way that suits the kids and ourselves, but there’s only so much we can do xx
I only have to sort out myself at home and that’s tough enough, I have so much admiration for parents looking after their kids at home. I really want to do the PE with Joe Wickes at some point x
Love how people can help with the kids teaching at home . My grandson is surprisingly doing better at home with his mum and dad . !
Our kids were given packs with work to do from school etc, but it wasn’t enough so we have had to evolve the plans etc, we have tried to do lessons as such with different subjects each day and some every day, we have readers in our family so everyday there’s an element of that, the PE with Joe wicks is something we don, but ill be honest, it makes me look bad and out of shape as I do it with them lol.
Looks like you have home school sorted, we did get a homework pack for our older child but for my younger one, it is uploaded on the school’s website weekly and we get an email from the teacher on the Friday.
We got some work for my youngest son who has ASC, but for the older two we just got a list of resources. Managing the needs of all three while doing some work, is tough, but we’re managing. We do P.E. with Joe Wickes every morning and then they do whatever worksheets I’ve printed off the night before for a while, before working on there joint topic of plants. They have also set up there own blog to share what they are up to each day.
We have been doing Joe Wicks too. Gosh it was tough this morning! My older two get sent weekly work by their school and it is keeping them more busy. With my 4 year old I have been doing lots of unstructured stuff, but a little bit of structured too as he starts school (supposedly!) in September! It’s great, but tough going!!
Daily work sounds fab, mine were just given a folder and have had no contact from the teacher. It is getting harder to get them engaged in learning, apart from reading.
It sounds like you guys are doing really well, well done! We are doing ok and have found splitting thing sup and doing short bursts of “work” split up with learning apps, art and reading has worked best. I have also made folders for each of my children full of work sheets, learning games and colouring in pages etc that they can pick and choose from if they want to.
