Giving Something Back: Saving Money To Look After A Loved One

It’s not that difficult to tighten your belt and save a bit of money. If you have a competitive nature you can even set yourself a goal one week and then keep trying to bring your Personal Best down. Very quickly you get to identify the areas where you are spending more than you need to. By the time you’ve been on a financial cleanse for about a month you should already be finding your outgoings shrinking.

That muffin you have with your morning coffee? Gone!

The taxi ride you take when there’s a bus stop right by your house? Over.

Those extra little conveniences you pay for because you’d rather not do them yourself? Bye-bye!

One of the side benefits of these savings is that often, they allow you to lead a healthier lifestyle. In drinking water more often instead of soda, you stay hydrated. By purging snacks you lose weight, and you get more exercise by doing more walking. Sometimes the shortcuts make sense because they save you money in another way. If they do, keep them – there will be other ways to save.

The problem you may find with all of this is that life gets in the way. It’s easy enough to fix the roof when the sun is shining, but when the storm begins you’re going to find you have big decisions to make. Sometimes, someone you love needs looking after. That’s when you’ll be glad you’ve been saving. But even though you have saved, it doesn’t mean it’s time to go spend-happy.

Giving Back To Those Who Gave You So Much

We are all grateful for the way our families look after us when we are kids. As we get older, we look to put back what we’ve been given. And as our relatives get towards the autumn of their lives, it’s time we look after them. When it gets to a point where an elderly relative – a parent, particularly – is not in a place to look after themselves, what do we do?

Helping Hands

Some people will arrange to put their parents in residential care. But not only is this expensive, it is impersonal. Inviting them to live with us is better. We don’t have to give up work to look after them. Having someone come in to help is an option. Organizations providing senior in home care are worth looking at. It’s better to have a companion who’ll get on with your parent and relate to them.

Keep Working If It Works For You

Of course, we’ll want to do as much of it ourselves as we can. When someone has given up a lot to help you, it’s only right to return the favor. But also remember that your parent is liable to feel coddled and like they’re a burden if you give up work to look after them. Moreover, doing what you can is often enough if supported by the rest of your family. Some might have the means to help their relative with luxury retirement living, other may curate another arrangements for the best results.

By having someone around to give company and assistance, they keep more of their independence for longer. What’s important to remember is that you save money on the things that you don’t need. This puts you in a place to have it available for the times it genuinely is needed. And never is it more appropriate to spend a little than when someone you love is in need.
