We have been thinking about getting a pet in the family for quite some time now and have been leaning towards a puppy as Jack loves dogs. Of course, there are plenty of things to consider when it comes to getting a puppy..

 

Choosing to adopt a puppy is a big decision; one that will change your life. However, it is important that you ask yourself a few questions first in order to ensure that you are able to give the puppy everything it needs.

With an increasing number of puppies being abandoned and left with animal shelters, dog owners are needed now more than ever before.

However, before adopting a puppy, you should ask yourself five questions:

Puppies, especially take up a large amount of time. It will take time to ensure the puppy is happy and content in your home; it will also take time to train it properly. Experts believe that if dogs do not receive an adequate amount of time and attention from their owners they are more likely to develop behavioural problems, anxiety and obesity.

You should also consider whether you have the time to play with it and walk your dog regularly – dogs need and deserve plenty of attention and they are known for their high levels of energy.

Whilst many believe that certain breeds of dogs are perfect for living with small children – this is a myth. No dog comes ready for this kind of thing, so it is important that you establish whether you have the time and patience to ensure that both your children and your dog become friends. You must also teach your children how to behave around the dog. Although it won’t happen for quite some time, it is also important to prepare them for the eventuality of losing a pet.

If you have other pets, you should consider how they and the new puppy will get along. It is recommended that you introduce animals to one another before adoption.

If you tend to work late or travel a lot, it is important that you have support from family and friends. You must ensure that someone is there to look after the puppy at all times.

Puppy’s can be expensive just like any other pet, so it is important that you have the funds to pay for vet bills, insurance, food etc. Many dogs are given to animal shelters because their owners find that they can no longer afford them – so, it is important that you consider this.

Once you have asked yourself the above questions and you are happy with the answers; you are ready to adopt your very first puppy.
