Whether you’re preparing to head off to university this autumn or you’re already there working hard, there’s no harm in a little financial well-being advice to make sure you finish your degree on a good footing. This is very important these days, in a world where most students leave with huge dark clouds of debt hanging over them. If you manage your money well, you will never have to stress about money or have any financial burdens.
Find Affordable Accommodation
Living at home can save you plenty of money as a student, money that can be put towards your student loan repayments, but this isn’t possible for everyone. The majority of students have to travel or move away from home to pursue the careers they want.
While some universities offer cut rates for students in the first year, they usually have to find their own places to live from the second year onwards. Finding the perfect student accommodation isn’t always easy, but more and more options are becoming available – at student-friendly prices.
Stick to a Budget
One of the best times to learn budgeting is when you’re at university. Why? Because you have the time and resources to plan your lifestyle and your future carefully. Think about your habits and what you like to do for fun, track your spending over a period and decide what is important in your days and weeks. Keep your budget flexibly but train yourself to be mindful of it.

Avoid Borrowing
Depending on your social demographic and career pathway, borrowing for your studies or your future might be unavoidable. You might need to borrow for your student fees, for instance, or take out a student loan for your lifestyle needs.
Still, where possible, you should avoid borrowing. It can be tempting to take up the banks on their offers of zero interest rate loans for students, but it feels like free money, which it isn’t. You need to know how you’re going to pay it back, which may not happen as a student.
Make a Payback Plan
If you do decide to borrow, whether that’s for your student loans or a bank loan for a special holiday, remember to make a realistic payback plan and stick to it. If there’s one lesson, you need to learn while at university, it’s how to manage your finances intelligently.
A payback plan can be as simple as a standing order once a month. If you take out a loan for a summer holiday, make sure you can afford it and try to pay it back within a set time period. Don’t take out any more until this loan is repaid.
Think Big
Regardless of why you have decided to pursue a career pathway at university, you need to think about what will come after. You might go to university to expand your horizons. Still, if you don’t think big and have a strong idea of what you could do in the future, you might end up in a precarious life situation.
