Two years later, in 1916, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington, advocated for a day to honor fathers. Her own father, a Civil War veteran and single parent, had raised six children alone after the death of her mother. Dodd believed that fathers deserved recognition for their sacrifices and dedication too.

She proposed June 5th—her father’s birthday—as the ideal date, but due to scheduling, the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane was held on June 19, 1910. Over the decades, support for the holiday grew slowly, as many viewed it as a commercial counterpart to Mother’s Day.

It wasn’t until 1972 that Father’s Day was officially recognized as a national holiday in the United States, signed into law by President Richard Nixon. Today, it’s celebrated around the world in various forms, often involving cards, gifts, barbecues, and family gatherings.
