For one of the first times in history we are actually about to see the number of our senior generation surpass that of the younger generation, with those 65 and up making up 15.6% of the global population by 2050! A lot of that can probably be attributed to the fact that people are now living longer than they once were and also the Baby Boomers from just after the Second World War.
Bathing Solutions have started a campaign to break social barriers as society often casts off its senior citizens as ‘incapable’ or ‘unable’ to learn new skills when in reality we know that this isn’t true! Through skill shares, the older generation are learning to take great photos, start a blog, start an Etsy store, learn a new language, learn to knit, do pilates, read faster. These are all valuable skills that some of us have luckily been able to learn and take for granted and why shouldn’t our senior citizens benefit too?
The brand is one of the first companies to specialise in the supply and installation of bathrooms specifically designed for the mature customer. Many of their products are made in their own UK factory and they are probably the largest company in the market place through the dedication, professionalism and commitment they show to their customers.
This campaign is quite close to my heart – I’ve mentioned many times that my father is elderly which in turn means that my aunt and uncles on my Dad’s side are also quite elderly too. Add to that my maternal grandparents and I have a lot of elderly people in my family who society probably deems as incapable of learning anything new or even just doing anything. However, many of mine lead very active lives – my Dad is always in the garden as he loves growing his own, one of my uncles helped set up our local care group which is now a registered charity and does vital work in our village, another uncle retired and now drives for the care group and is a parish councillor and is on the Village Hall committee! They are all so eager to keep busy and learn new things and I think this is great and should be encouraged!
I’ve tried teaching my Dad to use the internet (explaining blogging was a fun experience), my nan how to text and I believe it is never too late to learn a new skill. Why don’t you help me and Bathing Solutions in #BreakingBarriers – why not help a senior citizen that you love find a new skill? There are a number of courses that can be found – I’m definitely going to be looking into some with my Dad. If not, perhaps dedicate some time to helping them learn something that you are passionate about – whether that be blogging, knitting or even photography!
