Jack started nursery up at the school this year and boy, did it cost a lot to get him all kitted out. New uniform, shoes, PE kit, plimsolls, book bag, bottle and so much more – it all adds up very, very quickly. But what if your child is moving up to the next part of the school? As they grow, so does the price of back to school essentials in line with this or so you’d think. You start needing to buy textbooks, stationery and more and I bet sometimes you’re left wondering where all that money has gone – when you have little to show for it!
It is interesting then to see the results of a survey conducted with Great British Bingo. When asked how much people spent on back to school essentials with 5 price point options available: £0-10, £10-£50, £50-75, £75-£100 and £100; what would you say was the most common answer? If you are anything like me, you would have opted for one of the middle ground price points. But yet the survey found different.
More than 50% only spent between £0-£10 on their back to school essentials this year. Sounds odd, doesn’t it? How could this be possible, I hear you cry? I am inclined to think that this is because of the stretched pennies we all seem to be suffering from nowadays. It seems people are prepared to make do and mend when it comes to these essentials or turning to budget brands to keep costs down. After all, some supermarkets do some fab school uniforms nowadays where you don’t need to break the bank to be able to purchase them.
Survey results show that £10-£50 was the next most popular option followed by £100+ – the middle ground options don’t even seem to get a look in! This also seems to be across the board for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Everyone seems to be cutting costs when it come to those school essentials and I can see why, it is far too easy to spend a lot if you aren’t careful.
Are you surprised by these results? I certainly am! What would you have guessed as the answer?
