History & Heritage

I’ve never really spoken about many members of my family apart from my parents, Steve, Jack and occasionally my grandparents – and I certainly haven’t mentioned my great grandparents. I only ever met one of my great grandparents but she used to regale me with plenty of stories from her childhood before old age started to catch up with her. She was born in 1913 – the year between two major historical events: the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 and the start of World War 1 in 1914.

She had plenty of stories to tell me and it often had me thinking – what stories would my other great grandparents have been able to tell me had I met them? One set were born in the 1890’s, having my grandad quite late in life – I’m sure they would have had plenty to tell me.

I have a great respect for our past and love finding out more about it. That’s why I was intrigued when I heard about the Scottish Friendly takeover of Marine & General. I always find it sad when aged and prestigious companies have to close their doors so even though Marine & General will be no longer, I’m glad that they will be continuing under the Scottish Friendly mantle.

As Britain’s oldest company with the company registration 00000006 (the five previous companies have long since ceased to exist) and some early customers being passengers on the Titanic, they certainly are prestigious. More information on the takeover can be found here.

I’m one of those people that gets really sad when an iconic company has to cease trading – one such example was Woolworths which I still miss to this day – and I believe that plenty of things contribute to our history and heritage: people, major events, companies, landmarks. That is why this is so important that it is recognised – it’s a piece of history that Scottish Friendly are taking over.

Reminiscing on long gone conversations with my great grandmother has really renewed my interest in finding out more about my family from yesteryear. We know that Steve has some interesting history involving Arsenal FC (which is great considering that is the team we both support) and I’d love to find something equally as interesting in my history.

Are you like me and interested in our past? Do you agree with some of the points I made here?
