Not many people realise just how significant an impact your sleep has on your overall health, wellbeing and happiness.

Poor sleep not only leaves you feeling exhausted during the day, but it can also impact your digestion, your appetite, your brain, your focus and attention, your energy levels, your mood, your social life, your relationships, and so much more. A lack of sleep also increases your stress levels, which, when chronic, can lead to complicated health conditions.

If you don’t want to feel tired all the time, irritable, unable to focus, have headaches and more, then it is important that you understand just how critical quality sleep is and how you can give this to yourself.

To help you on your journey, here are some top ways that you can improve your sleep and feel better every day.

#1 Create a consistent routine

Routine is going to be one of the biggest things that will help your sleep quality. When you are consistent with a routine and a time to go to bed and wake up, you can regulate your circadian rhythm and make it much easier and quicker to fall asleep at night and to wake up in the morning.

Part of your bedtime routine should be winding down before you sleep. Do this for about an hour beforehand, and avoid using anything with screens or that will stimulate your brain, such as scrolling on social media. Instead, read a book or learn how to meditate

#2 Craft your environment

The environment that you sleep in is going to be important. First, you should only use your bed for sleep and intimacy, so ensure that you have a dedicated space for bedtime. Make your bedroom cool, dark and quiet so that the conditions are optimal for bedtime. If necessary, use earplugs to reduce noise and blackout curtains to reduce light. Invest in comfortable clothes, such as plus size nighties, a mattress and pillows. This will make you as comfortable as possible and ensure you fall asleep with ease.

#3 Consider your lifestyle

Lifestyle is going to have a huge impact on your sleep. If you have a long, busy and stressful day and tend to rely heavily on caffeine and nicotine, you are going to find it hard to wind down and get restful sleep. It is therefore important that you consider your habits during the day, especially in the afternoon and evening. Reduce things like alcohol, heavy meals, nicotine and caffeine. Regular exercise can be helpful in regulating your body, but should not be intense before bed. Expose your body to natural light during the day to help your circadian rhythm. Everything you do in the lead-up to bedtime will impact your sleep. The way you let yourself wake up can also have an impact. It is recommended that you avoid snoozing where possible and avoid screens and social media use first thing in the morning.

Sleep is critical for your health and well-being. Consider these top tips to help you sleep better and, in turn, feel better.
