Have A Spare Room? Why Not Create A Guest Room

If you’ve got a spare room in your home and you’re not quite sure what to do with it, have you thought about turning it into a guest room? If you don’t have guests that often, you might not have even considered the possibility, but it’s also possible that you don’t have guests because you have nowhere for them to stay.

Most people have friends or relatives who live a good distance away from them, too far to make the drive and then head back in the same day. As such, it’s likely that you rarely see them, or if you do, someone has to cover the cost of a hotel and it’s just a bit much. So, the best option then is to turn your spare room into a guest room where people can stay with you, ensuring the most comfortable trip.

Now, if you’ve never done this before then this might seem quite challenging, but we’re here to help. In this article, we’re going to be taking a dive into a range of things that you need and need to do in order to create an awesome guest room. Keep reading if you would like to find out more.

The first thing that we’re going to take a look at is painting the walls of the room so that it’s a color that appeals to most people. Of course, you’re never going to be able to please everyone 100%, but you should opt for a neutral color so that it doesn’t feel like it’s aimed one way or another. Most people tend to choose either an off-white, a beige, or something similar, maybe in a warmer tone to make the space feel more comfortable.

If your room at the moment is a dark color and you want to change that, you’re going to need a base color before you paint over with the lighter one, just to make sure that it’s not showing through. Even if you paint over it a few different times, there’s no guarantee that certain colors aren’t going to show through anyway.

Change The Floor

Next, you should think about changing the flooring. If you make changes to the flooring, then you can guarantee that it looks incredible and also provides practical benefits. For instance, you might want to think about changing the guest room flooring to laminate flooring. Laminate flooring is a cost effective solution which will look incredible and also mean that your guest room is easy to clean. There’s another possibility worth thinking about as well. With laminate flooring you can explore lots of different designs and styles. This means that you can choose a colour or style with the rest of the elements that you have used in your guest room.

Carpet would be the main alternative to laminate flooring. Carpet is a great choice because it will dampen footsteps which is useful if your guest room is part of the upper floor of your property.

Invest In A Good Bed

One of the most important parts of creating a guest room is to invest in a good bed. Not only do you want it to look good, but you also have to think about the comfort of your guests. You wouldn’t want to go and stay with someone only to find that you’re sleeping on the world’s most uncomfortable bed because it was the cheapest one that you could find, would you? No, and you shouldn’t expect other people to be okay with it.

If you take a look around online, there are a whole range of beds that you can think about purchasing, depending on the space that you have available and the style that you are going for. It might be the case that the room has plenty of room, so getting a king size bed to accommodate multiple guests isn’t going to be too much of an issue. However, if you’ve got a smaller room available, then you may be better off looking at daybeds which can double as both a sofa and a bed. It’s a space saving idea, that ensures comfort all day long.

Think Of The Linens

On the same subject as the bed, you need to take the time to dress the bed up so that it looks as appealing as possible. You want the bed linens that you use to feel luxurious, to look incredible, with people asking you all of the time where you got them from because they are so amazing. It’s advisable that you have a few different sets so that if there is a long stay coming, you can change the sheets after a week or so.

Provide Towels

When you have guests coming to stay, think about whether you are going to provide towels or not. You don’t want them taking up room in their luggage with towels for the entirety of their stay. A lot of households will have towels that are solely used for guests and can be placed on the bed before they arrive.

Towels are always a nice thing to walk into, especially if they are nice and soft. The last thing anyone wants is to use rough towels after a shower or bath so make sure you only get good quality towels that last a while.

Curtains Or Blinds

Another option worth thinking about is the curtains or the blinds that you need for your guest room. There are lots of different choices to consider here. One of the best options would be blackout blinds. This is particularly useful if you are in a built up environment. Blackout blinds completely prevent light from getting into the room which is great news for anyone staying in your property. They can also be set as an automated system which means that you can open or close them with the flick or a switch or even a remote. Layering your curtains and blinds are a great choice too because your guests can decide which option is right based on the season or the weather.

Entertainment Options

Another option for a wonderful guest room is to offer some form of entertainment so they don’t have to feel like they need to go straight to sleep when they retire for the night. You could put a TV in the room, a lovely flat screen television is always a welcome addition to any room. If you don’t have access to any streaming sites then you might also add in some DVDs that they can choose from. However, if you have streaming sites that you use, then you could also link these with the guest TV

Failing that, how about you place some of the most recent magazines in the room for them to read. This could be a variety of mags including home, garden, hobbies, and celebrity gossip ones.

In-Room Refreshments

Finally, think about any refreshments your guests might want while they are spending time in their room. If you don’t want your guests to feel like they are bothering you then you could place a fully stocked mini fridge so they can help themselves. You could also have a tea, coffee, or hot chocolate station somewhere in the room as well. You want to spend time with your guests so it is essential you don’t give them everything so they never come out and spend time with you!

We hope this helps you understand some of the key steps that you should take if you are adding a guest room to your home. The right guest room will ensure that you add value to your property and ensure it’s a more practical space.
