What do you turn to when you’re bored? Your mobile devices. There’s no better way to pass the time than bingeing Netflix shows or getting lost in a YouTube hole. Before you know it, a couple of hours have gone by and you’re hungry and ready to eat.
All you need to do is rinse and repeat the routine for the next couple of weeks until the lockdown is finally eased! Smartphones and tablets are lifesavers when you’re housebound, but they’re not healthy. An increase in your screen time could result in weight gain, diabetes, or a lower life expectancy rate. Yes, it’s a big deal.
For those who don’t think entertaining yourself without an internet connection is possible, here are four surprising alternatives you may want to keep in mind.
Bring Phone Calls Back
The difference between a phone call and a text message is minimal. Both involve a mobile phone, but the former doesn’t force you to stare at a screen while you’re having a conversation. This is an essential distinction because putting your mobile to your ear automatically reduces screen time while allowing you to socialise with friends and family. All you need to do is bring back an old-favourite and dial a number rather than using WhatsApp.
Read One Chapter Of A Book
Don’t commit to a whole book just yet as the idea may put you off reading altogether. Then, you’ll quickly become bored and the tactic will be counterproductive. Committing to a single chapter is a perfect compromise because it’s quick and easy – most are fifteen to twenty pages long – and lets you get a feel for the story. You may require reading glasses if you’re used to staring at a screen as the eyes will get tired pretty quickly. Still, it’s a great way to fall asleep at night, so don’t worry about showing your age too much!

Listen To A Podcast
Again, this is a loophole. However, it’s a smart move because you can listen to a podcast without the visuals. Sure, the video, if there is one, heightens the experience, yet it’s a needless addition to your daily screen time. Consuming a podcast traditionally will not only enable you to stave off boredom but also sharpen your hearing skills. To listen properly is a skill that will positively impact your relationships as you won’t appear as disinterested or self-absorbed.
Meditate
Meditating at home is challenging, especially when you’re surrounded by distractions. The temptation to cut short a session is intense, which is why lots of people switch on the TV for “background noise.” The goods news is that you can do nothing and forget about being bored by leaving the house. New rules allow people in England to drive anywhere they want to exercise, and there are zero restrictions on how often you can leave the house.
So, why not drive to a quiet spot in the country to meditate? Or, you can travel to a local beauty spot and enjoy the sunshine.
See, it is possible to reduce screen time and boredom!
