Finally, after dating for what feels like an eternity, he popped the question. You’re engaged! Yay! After posting your lovely and heartfelt engagement announcement for everyone to see, it’s time to celebrate with those you consider to be your nearest and dearest. Engagement parties are not something that is 100% necessary when planning a wedding, but it’s a great excuse for those couples that simply cannot wait for the wedding to celebrate – especially as long engagements seem to be making a comeback. Back in the day, the bride’s parents would plan this party, but lately it’s more common for the couple or their close friends to do the dirty work. This is great because engagement parties are not beholden to as many formalities as other wedding events, so they are much easier and more fun to plan. But, where do you start when throwing one of these festive events?
When?
This is an exciting time, but you don’t want to jump the gun, especially because you are going to be planning wedding related events for some time. Many engagement parties take place a few months after the proposal. This way, you can enjoy some lovely time simply being engaged before getting sucked into the planning.
Who?
Remember that everyone you invite to your engagement party should probably be invited to the wedding as well, so sending out a Facebook invite to everyone on your friends list is probably not the best way to go. The most important thing is that everyone in your immediate wedding party can attend. Once they have been confirmed, it is best to stick with close friends and family members that live within a reasonable distance. If you prefer things to be more intimate, consider throwing a bridal shower instead.
Where?
The venue that you hold your party at will set the tone for your wedding theme as well, so consider that when deciding where to host. The simplest and most workable place to host is inside the home. This way you can purchase as many engagement party decorations as you see fit and begin to establish your overall theme. You also have the most control when the party takes place in the comfort of your home.
What do you do?
There are so many questions now. Do you serve food? Depending on the theme and venue, yes, but the idea is to keep it simple. Have some nice drink options and non-messy finger snacks and your guests will be content. This is not the kind of wedding event where you need games and prizes. It is more about allowing all sides of the families to interact and mingle for the first time, so don’t stress about entertaining everyone.
Overall, engagements should be the most wonderful and magical time of your pre-married life. Enjoy the time, throw together a nice party to celebrate with those you love, and enjoy the moments while you have them. Because after this, wedding planning will be in full swing!
