Olivia is five months old today and is creeping ever closer to the age where we can start weaning. We will probably do what we did with Jack and start with some purees before moving onto finger foods. But how do you choose the right food for your child and work out exactly what they will like? It is obviously trial and error – Jack loved everything but cauliflower cheese and rusks so we were quite lucky – but how will Olivia do?
We obviously want to be sure Olivia is getting all the nutrients she needs and is eating plenty of healthy food like we all do. Whilst we may occasionally make our own purees for her, we’ve been taking a look at some of the organic baby foods out there on the market for us to try.
We went to get Olivia weighed yesterday and talked to our health visitor about weaning as we won’t see her until after Olivia turns 6 months. It has been a long time since we were weaning Jack and the information out there on the internet can be so widely different, you never know what is the right thing to believe. She said that introducing finger foods is great at 6 months but starting on a pot of puree is also good. She mentioned that Olivia can have tap water from the age of 6 months and also have dairy such as cheese and cows milk in cereal but not on its own. Trying to find the best organic baby cereal can be difficult – trying to ensure you are giving them a decent cereal that isn’t full of sugar and is atually full of goodness. I don’t remember when Jack started having cereal but our health visitor said that babies can have it from six months so we will definitely be giving it a try with Olivia.
When it comes to weaning, everyone is different. Some babies will love purees, others will turn their noses up and be happy going straight onto finger foods. It is important to work with your baby to find out what they like and working with them. Olivia has been showing signs of wanting food for a while so hopefully when we do start weaning, she will be great and enjoy the majority of stuff we give her.
How has your weaning journey gone with your previous children? Did you do purees or baby led weaning? What worked best for you?
