Owning a high-end car can be a dream come true for some people, and many drivers do indeed save their whole lives for the car of their dreams. But it isn’t all you might think! There are costs of owning luxury vehicles that you may not consider, from increased debt to maintenance.

Almost Instant Depreciation

It is often said that a car begins to lose value as soon as it is driven off the showroom floor. That might be true, and vehicles do indeed lose a lot of value pretty quickly. This means you won’t be able to sell your car anywhere near the price you paid for it, unless it is some kind of limited edition or a car enthusiast favourite. However, there are some exceptions, like Audi luxury cars, that will depreciate much more slowly than other brands because of how well they are made.

Higher Purchase Price and Debt

Perhaps you have saved hard for a down payment on the car you have always dreamed of. That’s admirable, but it doesn’t end there. That’s just the initial layout, and there will be a higher price to pay. For example, you probably hope to purchase a car on finance, unless you have a huge amount of money to spend in one go. Because of the price of the car and interest, you will have to pay much more each month than you would expect to pay for something like a hatch.

Owning a High-End Car Can Impact Insurance

A report in the UK found that 19.3 million drivers were found to be overcharged because of silly policies like a low-mileage penalty. Of course, there are many hidden costs when your car breaks down, and insurance is one, but it’s useful to have, and the law requires it. However, the value of your car and its desirability are two factors that are considered when you own one. Even the crime rate of where you live is taken into consideration when calculating a policy.

Specialist Maintenance and Repairs

One of the things that is overlooked a lot by luxury car owners is that not all garages can maintain all vehicles. There are specialist maintenance and repair services that specialise in high-end cars, and you may have to take your new pride and joy to them for things like the MOT. Of course, specialisation comes with a cost, so you can expect to pay a lot more for repairs with one of these garages than you would usually pay for the maintenance of a standard car.

Fuel, Taxes and Extra Fees

As a vehicle owner, you will know that there are many other costs of car ownership, especially in the UK! Road and luxury car tax, fuel duty and even vehicle registration are all extras that you will have to pay for. However, unlike most standard cars, some of these can be higher for owners of what are considered high-end vehicles, especially if they are more polluting, larger in size and over a certain engine power. So be prepared to pay more than your neighbours!

Summary

Quick depreciation in value is one of the biggest financial impacts of owning a high-end car. Of course, you can also expect to pay much higher insurance premiums. And the costs of ownership, such as fuel, tax and registration, can also be much higher for luxury car owners.
