How to Deal With A Reluctant Child Who Needs Braces

Collaborative Post

Not all children are created equal, some will need braces, and some will not. If you are the parent of a child who needs braces, you may already know that it is challenging trying to convince them to have a brace if they are apprehensive. This problem can be made especially hard when you have a difficult teenager who is concerned about how the braces will feel and, more importantly, look at school. There is no doubt that braces can drastically improve the way a person looks in the long run. Braces fix crooked teeth, misaligned jaws, and over or underbites, for example. They can give your child that million-dollar smile. So, it is very important that your child goes through the process of fixing their teeth. Here are a few ideas on how to convince your child to have a brace:

Have a Heart to Heart

The worse thing you can do is go in guns blazing, telling them that they are having them with no discussion. Sit down and have a heart to heart about why your child is reluctant to have braces. Only by finding out why will you be able to discuss the issues. Generally, a teenager will be concerned about how other school kids will react to their braces. You should point out to them that other teenagers have them too, and if possible, go in armed with what celebrities had braces. If you had braces, this is your chance to tell your child. Let them know that braces have come a long way since your day too.

They Are Worried About Being a Metal Mouth

If your child is really digging their heel in and refuses to have metal braces, there are other options. You could go for clear braces. These are more difficult to see, so it would help to resolve some of their fears about their peers seeing them. The downside is they take longer to fix teeth than the traditional metal types.

Now is the Time

You have to let your child know the consequences of not having a brace now. If they have a bad overbite, for example, it is not going to resolve on its own. In fact, it will get worse. It could mean that they lose teeth and end up having dentures at a young age. That would be awful as a 20 something. Imagine the emotional torment. To avoid this, they will need a brace at some point and now is better than later. And in younger people, it will take less time to resolve.

Straight Healthy Teeth Need Less Work

Let your child know that this is a major investment in their future. If they don’t want to spend thousands every year on dentistry due to unresolved misaligned teeth, they should have a brace now. Straight teeth are easier to cleans and look after. Not only that, with straight teeth, there will be less emotional stress as their mouth will look nice. They won’t feel the need to hide a smile beneath a hand or a face mask!
