Parents Perception of Underage Drinking vs The Reality

A survey for Global Be(er) Responsible Day reveals interesting findings about parents perceptions of responsible drinking.

Data from a new survey illustrated that although only 39% of 11 – 15 year olds have tried alcohol in their lives, parents believe that this number is actually 57%.
Similarly, when asked to predict the amount of these teens that were drinking once a week or more, parents guessed at a third when in fact it is just 5%.
The survey by AB InBev UK was commissioned to coincide with Global Be(er) Responsible Day, an event dedicated to promoting responsible and safe drinking.
Data from the survey highlighted the fact that many parents still believe underage drinking is on the rise, whereas in truth it has been declining for the past five years.
AB InBev UK pointed to the polling results as a reason for its ongoing partnership with the Alcohol Education Trust which seeks to equip parents to talk to their children about responsible drinking.
When the Alcohol Education Trust released the data from the survey, they also publicly announced the appointment of a parent coordinator in the North West of England.
This parent coordinator will be directly responsible for working with adults of school children to educate about responsible drinking and help bridge the gap between understanding and reality.
A similar position was filled not long ago in the North East of England.
