I love supporting small businesses. I find out about small independent businesses from a variety of places – other bloggers, social media, my local community. I have a select few particular favourites and like to support them where possible and also like to find out about more. There is something so special about buying a product or service from a small business that is unique, bespoke – something you can really admire the handiwork of and be assured of the time and effort that has gone into it. Knowing that your product is fairly unique in comparison to being something that is mass produced can be a great feeling.
I’ve recently found out about some fab small businesses who really deserve all the love and support we can give them as their products are fantastic – Beyond Candles and Henryka are just two recent discoveries who deserve to go on to bigger and better things.
With the referendum in June leading to Brexit, plenty of people have been concerned about what effect it would have on their lives. Recent research has shown that despite the fear and uncertainty we’ve been dealing with in the months after the vote, UK small businesses are in fact remaining quite hopeful.
The research from Boost Capital saw 500 small businesses interviewed in association with OnePoll and it revealed that 90% of the respondents did not regret their referendum vote. In anticipation of the triggering of Article 50, 43% of small business owners stated that they did not believe that their businesses would be affected by Brexit in the next year with 48% believing there will be no impact at all on their business in the next five years.
I found this quite surprising – the stats really do tell a different story to what I was expecting. With the almost half and half divide of the referendum vote, I expected there to be more than 43% of the survey respondents to have voted to remain and over 50% aren’t taking any precautions in the event that they are affected by Brexit.
As a sole trader, I personally am worried about what the future may bring but its refreshing to know that not everyone is anticipating the triggering of Article 50 with such fear. Whilst no one can predict the future, it will be interesting to see if these small businesses were right all along.
