The Best Places For Accessible Travel In The UK

Collaborative Post

Whilst I myself don’t have limited mobility, I have many friends and family members who do. Both mine and Steve’s fathers are registered disabled as is Steve’s mum, I also have friends such as Sarah and Shona who also have limited mobility and often find it hard to visit certain places – I’m so proud of Shona for what she achieved with our local Lush store, its a big step towards making our city accessible for all.

I find that round our area not that much is that accessible. There’s constant flights of stairs and little consideration for those with limited mobility at all. My Dad really struggles most places and we have been considering a wheelchair or perhaps one of those used mobility vehicles for our holiday in a couple of weeks time. He really wants to keep up with Jack but he physically can’t and whilst he won’t say anything, I know it gets him down and it breaks my heart.

However anything is possible and there are some fabulous places across the UK that are accessible to all. Below is a fab infographic showing some great places that everyone can visit, regardless of mobility problems.

I’ve only visited one of these myself which is the Science Museum when I was in year 8 (14 years ago!). Its great to know that I am able to go on days out with Jack and his grandparents and not have to worry about being able to access these places. In my honest opinion, tourist destinations across the UK aren’t doing nearly enough to make their attractions accessible to all so its great to see some taking the lead and doing so.

If an iconic historic building such as St Paul’s Cathedral can make adaptations and even a mountain in Scotland can, there is no excuse for not making somewhere accessible whether it be a landmark, a shop, a restaurant or what. It isn’t fair and things need to change – I’m glad some places have started to take the lead.

What places do you find are best for accessible travel?
