When Did My Toddler Become So Independent?

Jack is starting to become fiercely independent in all aspects of his life. Choices of food, choices of TV show or film to watch, choices of what clothes to wear… he definitely knows his own mind and won’t take too kindly if you don’t take his wishes into account.

Sometimes I have to overrule his decisions as they just aren’t going to work – I’m sure that however much he would love to, wearing a bathing suit as a regular everyday outfit just won’t work and neither will having pizza for breakfast. This doesn’t always go down too well but tough – we have to make the decisions sometimes.

It has even got to the point where he will sit down at the computer with me and instruct me as to which new clothes I should buy him. He’s been known to put clothes in the shopping trolley when out and he even managed to sneak in a few food items that were definitely not on the list when we last did the food shop!

A typical outfit choice of Jack’s

Despite sometimes choosing the more out there choices in regards to fashion, food and (unfortunately) TV shows, he does also have an eye for the good stuff. I’ve occasionally found him dressing in an outfit I would never have thought to put together but shockingly works. He will pair an unlikely shirt, trousers and jumper and make it look spectacular – something I wouldn’t have necessarily thought a three year old was possible of.

He does occasionally have expensive tastes when we are out shopping – my grocery bill is sometimes testament to that – but he also loves some of the more affordable stuff available too. He loves clothes from TU, George, Florence + Fred and for slightly more, Melijoe. I’m actually starting to find shopping with him a much more fun experience rather than stressful as it is nice to see his input.

Will he always be this way? Probably not. He will probably revert back to wanting Mum to make all his decisions and do everything for him. But for now, my toddler has become super independent and it is quite refreshing, if sometimes a little challenging.
