I’ve mentioned before that we don’t really have very much of a garden and thus cannot do a lot with it. This means Jack really enjoys going to see either set of grandparents as he can go in their garden – he can run around and play football at Steve’s parents or he can help my Dad in his. You see, my Dad is a big advocate of growing your own and has been ever since I can remember. I used to love helping out when I was younger – I still don’t mind now – and Jack seems set to follow in my footsteps, even giving my Dad a list of things he wants to plant. This includes a pumpkin so, in his words, ‘I can have one for Halloween!‘. I often have people asking ‘Do you like to grow your own veg?‘ and the answer is yes and I would love to here but I just can’t. At least we have my Dad’s garden to do so – and my Dad gets helpers too!
Jack loves nothing more than helping to pick the fruit and veg (as shown by him picking carrots out the soil below) and I am keen to keep this passion for gardening and growing fruit and vegetables up as long as I can. I feel sad that I gave up helping as much when I was younger but I was going into my teens and life just started to get a little busy. I used to really enjoy helping my Dad in the garden and his allotments though (I even had one myself to grow fruit on) and would often go to the allotment with him on a Saturday morning armed with some music and headphones – it was lots of fun!
My Dad and I have been talking recently about what else he is going to grow with our (mostly Jack’s) help. As well as pumpkins, peas and carrots, we are thinking tomato plants, runner beans, courgettes, potatoes… The bonus is that I also come home armed with piles of fruit and vegetables which is always handy (especially when I am eating lots of it on Slimming World!). I’m looking forward to seeing the fruit and veg grow this year and seeing Jack continue to enjoy helping his grandfather in the garden when he knows he gets tasty treats at the end of the process (he loves his fruit and certain veg!).
