I’ve mentioned before that I don’t have a home office per se as my desk is in the dining room but as we have a small table in the living room too, the dining room doesn’t really get used as a dining room all too often. I have been spending time recently trying to make my home office more ‘me’ and to keep my motivation levels and productivity high.
I really struggle to keep motivated sometimes. I find that my desk often feels too boring and not really a happy place. I want to be inspired to sit at my desk and work not just because I have to. I have precious little time to work in as it is, I need to ensure I use it wisely.

I’ve recently added some new items to my home office which inspired me to have a bit of a declutter but I want to do some more to make it a more motivating workspace. I’ve had a few ideas as how to make some changes as best as I can in this rented property:
- Stick motivational things to the wall. I’m going to be sticking the goals and daily checklist printables that I printed out to my wall and a few other things, a couple of motivational quotes perhaps and my Slimming World certificates.
- Declutter every couple of weeks. It is easy for my desk to get overwhelmed with stuff – press releases, things that Jack puts on my desk, rubbish – when it is messy I have no motivation to work at it so keeping it tidy should help with this.
- Change the lighting. As I speak, I am currently working at my desk with just one light bulb working out of the three above my head, I’ve realised that perhaps I should get some new lightbulbs and perhaps not go for the ones I had before which aren’t great. I might pick up some I do need to make sure I am comfortable though from elsewhere rather than buying the ones I currently have again.
- Be colourful. Colourful things make me happier so having a selection of colourful note pads, pens and the like should keep me motivated to get the job done.
Hopefully by making a few changes I will be able to make my home office feel a little more like me and less of a place that I am reluctant to be in. My home office is a necessity to my income so if I need to be motivated to work, I need to be proactive and do something about it! I do need to make sure I am comfortable though!
How would you make your desk or home office more ‘you’?
